Update: Monday, Dec. 17th

We have returned from San Diego a few weeks ago, after our 2 week trip to spend some time with my sister and family.
They are living in a rental that is not too far from the ocean. They do have somewhat of an ocean view now. It's a 3 bed room 2 bath, that IS kind of old and a bit unkept, but it gives them a roof over their heads, running water, it came with furniture (and everything else, even the owners clothing in the drawers...), and their long desired ocean view.

Do you see the ocean?

We did get to enjoy a nice Thanks Giving Dinner with our family & close family friends. It was the highlight of the trip to be able to celebrate this family tradition of having Thanks Giving in San Diego.

We have visited my sister's home that burnt down on "Ash Lane" , how ironic...
On the way there, driving down the freeway, you can see the damage for miles. It didn't really hit me how bad it was until I actually seen and smelled what happened.
Right around Lake Hodges, where my sister used to live, the forest fire smelled awful. Everything was in ashes and there was no sign of coyote's or road runners, which were very common in the area. My sister's neighbor said that the vultures were so fat that they couldn't even fly. In the surrounding forest there were tons of deer carcasses.
To see my sisters place in ashes, really showed me how devastating this was. I guess the severity really didn't dawn on me until then. To see everything, EVERYTHING gone, I just cant imagine how it feels. I was just sad about not being able to have Thanks Giving there, and how my few months of memories of the place was torn by this fire. To see everything gone, I just can't imagine how it feels. Mina does a great job not showing her stress and sadness. To loose everything that you have ever owned...
It was amazing how EVERY SINGLE THING can just turn into ashes! Really, I thought at least the Fridge can keep out a fire but NO! The only things left in it's original form were bottles of nail polish (Strangely these bottles don't melt), the Le Creuset pots (cast iron), & the bath tub. That's it! We tried to look for some of her jewelry , but we could not find anything.
She did find her platinum ring though, we highly recommend getting jewelry in platinum and getting Le Creuset pots. :)

While we were there, we found out that the state got some extra funding from the Federal Government, and will be able to aid in the disposal of all of my sisters ruins on her property.

About rebuilding, they are still debating if they should just try to sell the property or build a home and then sell. My sister's company is sending my sister back to Japan next June, so there isn't that much time to look over construction and such. They may have to settle with just selling the property. Financially they may take a hit doing this, but it may be one less thing to worry about for them. Mina is on the phone every day with the insurance company, talking to contractors to figure how much they need to build, and all other businesses she has to take care of. It may just be easier to just let everything go.

My sister and husband have learned a lot from this episode, and I have learned a lot as well. We are all happy and fortunate that we have such great friends and family. Makes you realize that everyone needs help at one point and many are there to help. This experience has helped me look at things in a more positive way.

Update: Thursday, Nov. 8

On Tuesday, we have brought some muffins into John's work to raise money for donation.
Thank you all for your kind support and donations. As a result of our first bake sale event, we have raised about $220!
We really have to thank Atsuko-san for donating her time and supplies in baking all of those delicious muffins. They were a great hit!!

We have also received 4, "$50 gift certificates" to "Sharaku" Japanese Restaurant in Farmington Hills, to sell as a fund raiser. (They have the best sushi in Michigan)
If anyone is interested in purchasing one or two of these gift certificates, please email or contact John.

John, Anzu and I will be heading out to San Diego next Wednesday. I don't know what we could really do, but my sister seems excited that the family is still getting together for Thanks Giving.

Update: Saturday Nov. 3

Mina & Shin have signed a lease and have moved into their new rental today. They've gone to the West Bernardo volunteer center and signed up for support from FEMA. They wont know how much they will be donated until they go out and see the damage. Salvation Army also gave $200 worth of gift cards and Sony (where Mina works) also gave them a Walmart voucher.

We may have found an organization that may take care of the wreckage of their home.

They also continue to receive donations from many people, which we highly appreciate. At this time we've raised $294.90 USD.

Thank you very much for your continuous support!

Mina, Shin & Noel Enokida

Mina works for Sony and Shin designs furniture from his home studio. Their energy is addictive. They, along with their dog Noel, live in Escondido California in a neighborhood called Del Dios. Del Dios is located right on Lake Hodges which is a fantastic location offering undeveloped vista views and pleasant natural escape from the recent population increase in San Diego. It is a perfect place for Mina and Shin to live. They have worked hard for it. They've done a great job saving and planning to be able to live in such a place for their first home.

The recent wild fires in San Diego have claimed everything Mina and Shin own. With only 15 minutes to evacuate, they were able to leave with their laptops, their dog Noel and basically the clothes on their backs. They've lost everything they have worked so hard for. Lake Hodges was hit really hard by the fires and was even the spot where the major networks broadcast their special reports on the fires.

Through all of this, Shin and Mina have remained completely positive even when their insurance company said they wouldn't pay them back completely on what they've lost. They still are positive after finding out that there will be limited assistance from FEMA or their insurance company regarding cleanup efforts. Their positivity is inspiring.

We created this blog so people could pass along to anyone who would be able to help with a donation. Mina and Shin have a long expensive road ahead of them. Their insurance and personal finances can only help them so far. If you would like to help, please click on the "Donate" button at the top left of this page. Any amount will help and I assure you Mina and Shin will be thankful.

We can update the blog with news and more photos to show the progress of the cleanup and construction.

Thanks
John & Asa Stoll
